Lettera agli europei dalla National Review (plus "Idiotarian of the Year 2005")
Due consigli per il week end. Il primo è serio: leggere la bellissima "A Letter to the Europeans" appena apparsa sulla National Review Online (rivista di riferimento dei conservatori americani) a firma di Victor Davis Hanson. In estrema sintesi, la lettera spiega perché i neocon americani preferiscono un'Unione europea forte, critica, "identitaria" e con gli attributi, capace di cavare da sola le castagne dal fuoco senza dover pietire ogni volta lo zampino americano (do you remember Slobodan Milosevic e il mattatoio dei balcani?), a quell'entità debole, socialistoide, con velleità neutraliste, confusamente relativista e costantemente in posizione di invidiosa inferiorità verso gli Stati Uniti che sta prendendo corpo adesso.
Il passaggio chiave (scusate, di solito lo faccio, ma oggi non ho alcuna voglia di tradurre): «The world is becoming a more dangerous place, despite your new protocols of childlessness, pacifism, socialism, and hedonism. Islamic radicalism, an ascendant Communist China, a growing new collectivism in Latin America, perhaps a neo-czarist Russia as well, in addition to the famine and savagery in Africa, all that and more threaten the promise of the West. So criticize us for our sins; lend us your advice; impart to America the wealth of your greater experience — but as a partner and an equal in a war, not as an inferior or envious neutral on the sidelines. History is unforgiving. None of us receives exemption simply by reason of the fumes of past glory».
Il passaggio più acido: «Even in this debased era of multiculturalism that misleads our youth into thinking no culture can be worse than the West, we all know in our hearts the truth that we live by and the lie that we profess — that the critic of the West would rather have his heart repaired in Berlin than in Guatemala or be a Muslim in Paris rather than a Christian in Riyadh, or a woman or homosexual in Amsterdam than in Iran, or run a newspaper in Stockholm rather than in Havana, or drink the water in Luxembourg rather than in Uganda, or object to his government in Italy rather than in China or North Korea. Radical Muslims damn Europe and praise Allah — but whenever possible from Europe rather than inside Libya, Syria, or Iran».
Il secondo consiglio è cazzeggio puro. Qui c'è il referendum online per eleggere l'"Idiotarian of the year 2005" su Little Green Footballs, il blog di Charles Johnson, inventore del termine "idiotarian". Parola le cui origini ed etimologia sono spiegate qui, nella sempre politicamente correttissima Wikipedia, e che in italiano potremmo tradurre alla meno peggio con l'espressione di Lenin "utile idiota", aggiornata a dopo l'11 settembre. Qui gli interessati possono trovare l'Anti-Idiotarian Manifesto. Lo scorso anno stravinse Michael Moore davanti a Kofi Annan. Quest'anno se la giocano Hugo Chavez, Cindy Sheehan e il New York Times. Al momento Cindy è in vantaggio. L'Opinion Journal del Wall Street Journal consiglia di votare per lei, spiegando che «Chavez and the Times may be idiotarians, but their motives are impure: Chavez wants to hold on to power, while the Times aims to make a profit. Sheehan is an idiotarian for idiotarianism's own sake; she says the things she says simply because she loves to hate». Io non ho seguito il consiglio e ho votato per il NYT. Votare è comunque un dovere. C'è tempo sino alle 11.59 pm (pacific time) del 9 gennaio.
